About McCord Golf

Mickey McCord - McCord Safety Training

McCord Golf is owned and operated by Mickey McCord, a career golf course superintendent and fine turf manager.

Mickey got an early start in golf, working summers through high school and college at Mayfair Golf Club near his home in Green, Ohio.  He entered Ohio University with the goal of playing college golf and getting a degree in Business Administration on his way to becoming a PGA professional. He got the degree, but after trying for two years did not make the golf team. He then realized his future in golf would probably not be as a player.

Mickey had two mentors early in his career that helped him find his path. Dean Watkins, a high school friend and golf teammate, was the superintendent at Athens CC near Ohio University and showed Mickey the true profession of being a golf course superintendent. After graduating from Ohio U, Mickey moved to Charlotte, NC to work for Bill Anderson, CGCS at Carmel Country Club. With Bill’s encouragement, Mickey decided to return to school and earn his Bachelor’s degree in Turfgrass Management at Clemson University.

Mickey was a golf course superintendent for 25 years, earning his CGCS status in 1994. He managed two full construction/grow-in projects: Brier Creek Country Club (Raleigh, NC) and Chapel Ridge Country Club (Pittsboro, NC).  He has also worked on the supply side of the business with Scotts Proturf and Helena Chemical Company.

Mickey first realized the importance of crew safety training in 1989 when one of his employees accidentally started a fire when he lit a cigarette while riding a piece of equipment that he had left the gas cap off.

While working with the Carolinas Golf Group, Mickey developed and presented safety classes for his crews on a monthly basis and has given close to 100 training sessions.
